    Donkey Kong (1994)

After experiencing the eye-searing horrors of DK Land I desperately needed some quality kong time. My friend Penny sent some carts my way to be covered on the site, and DK ’94 was the crown jewel. It was a game I’d already played prior, so its banger status was never in doubt, but wow what a game this is. I had to share it! So I suggested it for our randomized-game-of-the-month show over at Pixel Die, and it won almost immediately. Kismet.

For your viewing and listening pleasure, almost an hour of top shelf fine vintage kong.

I honestly considered waiting to cover this one. Can you blame me? It’s legitimately one of the best games the system ever saw – I don’t want it to be downhill from here!

Regardless, DK ’94 is a masterpiece of platforming and puzzle design. Not just on the Game Boy, not graded on a curve – straight up just an incredible game. There is no facet of this that wasn’t carefully considered, no area that warrants an overhaul, not even the second to last world’s disparate mix of mechanics. Visuals, audio, gameplay, It-Factor. The day this falls off the top of the list will be a momentous one. Kong is Strong.
